KMR was founded in 1991 to help pharmaceutical R&D clients improve their productivity using business process improvement methods. It was clear there was a need for reliable, comparable performance data. An initial study examining trends in R&D in the mid-90s led to more extensive benchmarking work, with numerous studies focusing on various areas within R&D as well as the annual R&D General Metrics Study.
